I was the one who started this ruin
I was the one who built this wall
I was the one throwing stones at my brothers
I started it all.

I was the one so self-righteous and sober
I was the one who pre-judged your thoughts
I was the one who left you in the gutter
Even though I saw it all.

I told the secret I thought wasn’t worth keeping
I am the thief who stole what was yours
I was the one who forgot all about you
Though I was there through it all.

I was the person who accused you wrongly
I was the one who led this crusade
I am the one in need of forgiveness
For it was I who betrayed.

It was me, as I walked with pompous swagger
The collared Christian on street corner bright
Showing the world by my humble demeanour
That it was I who was right.

I kissed your enemy, ate at his table
I horded the treasures he offered to me
It didn’t take long to forget all about you
And the love you wanted from me.

Shield my eyes from the pain I have caused you
A splinter of truth will do.
I played the bride and then sold my love
And you knew it was I, too.
